Backbiting is a disease that can be cured by simply biting the tongue

Now before you crack up about my “one woman” show try to understand the message I am attempting to convey. The “conversation” in the video may seem petty, but its pretty common amongst some of us, especially women. I honestly wish I could say amongst ‘young immature women’ but that is not always the case. Many of us, young and old, have either participated in such conversations or sat quietly while such things were said.

We all know backbiting/gossiping is forbidden and it’s not hard to imagine why. Yet, we end up in these situations I like to call ‘backbiting sessions’.  If we truly understood how much of a problem having a loose tongue is we’d tighten up.  Backbiting is such a disease that can be cured by simply biting the tongue.
If refraining from talking about others is a difficult task then one should have a plan as to how these situations will be dealt with. At some point we have all sat with friends and someone’s name was mentioned in a not so polite manner. If you are brave enough you can say “I’m not comfortable with this conversation” or “I don’t want to talk about other people”. It’s so important to be conscious of this at all times. I was always taught ‘Those who talk about others will have no issue doing the same about you’.

It has been my experience that those who constantly talk about others will do anything to keep the drama going. Surround yourself with those who make an effort to stay away from things that cause problems between people and talking about others is at the top of the list. We all have weak moments and none of us are perfect so constant reminders are very necessary.

The next time we find ourselves in ‘backbiting sessions’ remember this verse “neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful” [49:12 .
